Top AI Assistants by Trust in 2026: ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini Ranked
You just told an AI chatbot something you'd never say to a stranger on the street. Maybe it was a customer complaint. Maybe it was next quarter's numbers.
Millions of people do this every day. Almost none of them stop to ask which platform actually earned that trust.
Here's the quick version. ChatGPT leads overall usage by a wide margin, and Gemini holds a clear second place. Claude, meanwhile, comes out on top in direct trust comparisons among people who've used more than one assistant.
A company called Profound put real numbers behind that question. They asked nearly 2,000 US adults which AI assistant they use and how much they trust it. They also asked what people would pay to keep a human from reading their chats. The answers don't line up with market share at all.
Add in that roughly half of US adults now use an AI chatbot at all, and this data touches almost every business. Here's what the full survey found, and what it means if your company runs AI on customer data.
Which AI Assistant Wins on Which Metric?
No single platform wins everything. Here's how the top three actually compare, metric by metric.
| Metric | Leader | The numbers |
|---|---|---|
| Most used overall | ChatGPT | Primary tool for 58% of users |
| Head-to-head trust | Claude | 59% vs ChatGPT, 66% vs Gemini |
| Paid subscription rate | Claude | 34% of users pay, the highest of any platform |
| Coding task usage | ChatGPT, Claude close behind | ChatGPT at 39%, Claude at 33% |
| Second-largest primary user base | Gemini | 25% primary share, but trails badly on trust |
So there's no clean winner here. ChatGPT wins on reach, Claude wins on trust and loyalty, and Gemini holds a strong but distant second place.
What Actually Drives AI Assistant Trust?
Hands-on use drives AI assistant trust, not brand size. ChatGPT leads primary usage, while Claude wins the survey's direct trust comparisons among people who've used both tools.
Ask people if they trust AI in general, and the big platforms barely separate. Around 35% to 37% of each one's users say yes. Too close a gap to explain much.
The real difference shows up in a head-to-head test instead. Claude wins every reported head-to-head trust comparison in the survey. Users who tried both platforms pick Claude over ChatGPT 59% of the time, and over Gemini 66% of the time.
Did you know? A separate global study from the University of Melbourne and KPMG asked the same basic question. It covered 48,000 people in 47 countries. Only 46% said they trust AI systems at all, even though two out of three use AI regularly. Using a tool and trusting it turn out to be two very different questions.
The Profound survey found the same split among individual AI assistants. ChatGPT and Gemini get trusted by people who've never even opened them, likely riding OpenAI and Google's name recognition. Claude works the opposite way.
Only 41% of people who've heard of Claude but never used it call it trustworthy. Actual users push that number to 76%, a 35-point jump among people who have actually used it.
Important: trust built on brand name hits a ceiling fast. Most people who'll like a product already do, without ever touching it. Trust built through actual use grows slower, but it runs far deeper once it lands.
Which AI Assistant Do Most People Use?
ChatGPT is the top choice for 58% of US users. Gemini comes in second at 25%, and every other platform splits what's left.
Look closer, though, and the picture shifts. Claude holds just 7% of primary usage overall, yet accounts for 33% of primary tool choice for coding tasks.
| Platform | Aware of it | Used past month | Primary tool |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 98.9% | 85.7% | 58.2% |
| Gemini | 95.8% | 77.4% | 25.4% |
| Claude | 79.4% | 34.1% | 7.0% |
| Copilot | 78.7% | 35.0% | 4.1% |
| Perplexity | 46.8% | 10.1% | 0.5% |
"Aware of it" means the person has heard of the platform. "Used past month" means they've actually opened it in the last 30 days. "Primary tool" means it's the one they reach for most. The numbers come from Profound's survey of 1,999 US adults, fielded in June 2026.
Money tells a different story too. Claude actually wins on paid subscriptions. 34% of its users pay to use it, ahead of ChatGPT's 32% and well ahead of Gemini's 18%.
A smaller platform can still convert a higher share of its users into paying subscribers. That gap gets even more interesting once you factor in trust. Our earlier piece on the rise of the AI CMO covers why marketing teams are adding this layer now.
What Tasks Do People Trust Each AI Assistant With?
People don't stick to one AI assistant for everything. They switch tools depending on the job, and coding is where that shows up most.
The survey asked people to name their go-to tool for six different task types, and the split was sharp. Claude's coding share (33%) sits close behind ChatGPT's (39%) and clears Gemini's 15% comfortably. Copilot shows the opposite pattern. Its share roughly doubles for work tasks compared with personal ones like everyday advice.
- ChatGPT and Gemini act like generalists, handling everyday questions and quick lookups.
- Claude concentrates hard in coding and technical work.
- Copilot skews toward work accounts. Only 28% of its paid plans are personal purchases, against 79% for ChatGPT.
That coding lead shows up outside this survey too. Stack Overflow's own 2025 Developer Survey found Claude Sonnet earned the highest "admired" rating of any AI model among professional developers. That's despite a much smaller user base than ChatGPT.
Professional tip: picking an AI tool for one job, like drafting copy or debugging a script? Check which platform wins that specific task, not the whole market.
Age matters here too. Coding use drops by about 4 percentage points per decade, while everyday informational use rises a bit instead. Who uses a tool shapes what it gets used for, just as much as its features do.
How Much Will People Pay to Keep AI Chats Private?
People worry about AI privacy a lot more than they act on it. Over 80% say they're concerned about how their AI chats get used, but only 18% have ever paid extra for better privacy.
About 60% don't even know if their assistant trains on what they type. Concern is everywhere. Action is rare, and the gap comes down to missing information, not apathy.
Wooxy hears this same question constantly from marketers asking about AI and customer data. That's why Wooxy's own privacy policy stays in plain language, not buried legal text.
The survey backs this up directly. People who understand a platform's training policy take far more steps to protect their data than people who are simply worried. Understanding moves people to act. Vague worry alone rarely does.
Researchers also ran a pricing test, asking people to pick between AI plans that varied by price and three privacy features. One answer came out clearly on top.
| What users pay to avoid | Value per month |
|---|---|
| A human reading their conversations | $11.20 |
| Sponsored content mixed into answers | $6.46 |
| Their conversations training the model | $2.97 |
Having a human read their chats bothers people most. That's worth nearly four times what they'd pay to stop the AI from training on it. That's the opposite of where most privacy debates and laws actually focus.
Did you know? 43% of surveyed users deliberately switch between more than one AI platform for different tasks. That number climbs to 51% among Claude's own users, the highest rate of any platform in the survey. Using more than one tool on purpose is already normal.
What This Means for Marketers Choosing AI Tools
This data isn't really about picking a favorite chatbot. It's about what your customers quietly expect from any AI tool touching their information, including whatever runs your own marketing stack.
A tool being good at one specific job beats it winning the whole market. A platform can trail badly on overall reach and still be the right pick for one task, exactly like Claude and coding.
Being upfront about data matters just as much. Concern about privacy is nearly universal, yet only 18% of people ever act on it. Cisco's 2026 Privacy Benchmark Study backs this up. 46% of organizations say clear, plain communication builds customer confidence better than anything else.
Explain your data policy in plain language, and you're already ahead of most competitors. Wooxy keeps that kind of answer easy to find in its own FAQ, instead of hiding it behind a support ticket.

Which AI Assistant Should Your Business Trust?
Trust and market share measure two different things, and this survey makes that split hard to miss. The biggest platform isn't automatically the most trusted one for a specific task, especially once real customer data enters the picture.
Ask what a tool actually does with the data you hand it, not just how popular it is. That single question separates a platform worth building a workflow around from one you're just borrowing for now.
