Blacklist

This article explains the principles and importance of the Wooxy Blacklist. There are three distinct blacklists, which are covered in more detail in their respective articles:

A Blacklist is essentially a database of contacts. They are added to this list if an ISP, mobile operator, or Viber returns a delivery status indicating that the message could not be delivered, and the contact should be suppressed. Contacts on these lists are completely excluded from all future mailings for that specific channel (Email, SMS, or Viber). Contacts can also be added manually, via file import, or through the API, which is particularly useful when migrating an existing project to Wooxy.

Important! We strictly prohibit sending spam through our platform. This is a violation of our Anti-Spam Policy. The use of contact lists purchased, scraped from the web, or provided by third parties is also strictly prohibited. If such contacts are detected, our anti-spam system may automatically block the account, and a proportional fine may be applied.

Things to know before starting

  • Blacklist protects the domain reputation and delivery rates.
  • The Blacklist is a crucial component of email marketing compliance requirements under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the CAN-SPAM Act, and other applicable laws in the Customer’s country of residence. The Act requires email senders to provide a simple, accessible way for recipients to opt out of future emails, particularly those who have previously unsubscribed or marked previous emails as spam.
  • GDPR mandates obtaining clear and explicit consent for email marketing, respecting individuals’ rights to object, ensuring transparency in data use, practicing data minimization, and maintaining data security. Compliance is crucial when dealing with personal data, including email addresses.
  • The Blacklist also collects contacts that bounce, are blocked, inactive, or are invalid.

Email Blacklist status

Hard bounce

A hard bounce indicates a permanent reason an email cannot be delivered.

  • Invalid email address
  • Unable to deliver mail
  • Blocked email address
  • Domain reputation problem
  • Use of purchased, rented, and third-party lists

Complaint

It occurs when a recipient clicks the “report spam” button in their mailbox. Sending emails to recipients after they’ve filed a spam complaint harms sending reputation. It signals to ESPs sending unwanted emails and not respecting recipients’ preferences, which can result in the IP address or domain being blacklisted.

  • Use of purchased, rented, and third-party lists
  • Not including an unsubscribe link in the emails
  • Old or outdated recipient email addresses
  • Sending content that is not relevant to recipients
  • Sending correspondence too often

List-unsubscribe

“List-unsubscribe” is a native unsubscribe option offered by many ESPs, including Gmail, Yahoo!, and Outlook. It allows r contacts to opt out of receiving emails. It helps reduce email spam and enhances the user experience.

List-unsubscribe mechanism example

Phone Blacklist status

Undeliverable

It occurs when the recipient’s phone is inactive, or the phone number is unreachable or invalid. It can also occur when the recipient blocks the sender’s phone number or messaging service.

Invalid

An “Invalid” reject reason in SMS sending indicates that the message could not be delivered due to issues with the recipient’s phone number or other technical problems. Also, the recipient’s phone number may not exist or may have been deactivated.

Unsubscribe

The “Unsubscribe” reject reason in SMS sending indicates that the recipient has opted out of receiving further messages from the sender.

Viber Blacklist status

Invalid

The “invalid” status indicates that the contact or number added to the blacklist may be invalid or unrecognized.

Spam

In general, the “spam” status implies that the contact or number was marked as “spam”. It also indicates that the Viber message has been identified as spam by Viber’s spam filters. The reasons for spam rejection may include suspicious content, sender/contact behavior, or other factors that align with spam detection criteria.

Note! If an IP address is added to a legitimate service’s blacklist, it’s crucial to submit a delisting request, as it prevents sending email to that ESP (e.g., Gmail, Hotmail, iCloud).  can usually find the necessary details for this process in the Email Blacklist Raw Log. This step is essential to regain email-sending privileges and maintain reputation.

Wooxy keeps a close eye on our IPs. We try to resolve any issues with Blacklists as quickly as possible. However, getting an IP off the Blacklist often requires the user to contact the ESP.
