AI in Business 2026: Why Agents Are Moving Beyond Chat
AI in business has quietly changed jobs. A year ago you asked it questions. In 2026 you give it tasks, and it returns the finished work: report pulled, segment built, campaign scheduled. A new OpenAI report on Europe, published on October 14, shows how fast that shift is spreading.
It also shows something less comfortable: companies that hand AI real jobs are pulling away. By September, a typical EU company used AI 1.5 times as much per person as a typical firm did in May. The EU's leaders used it 6.1 times as much. Same market, same tools, very different Mondays.
The good news is that you are not late. At small EU businesses, weekly users of AI agents grew more than eightfold in five months. What the leaders have is a habit and a connection between AI and their real tools, and both are easy to copy.
We built that connection for marketing, and Wooxy MCP plugs into any AI chat that supports MCP. Let's see what OpenAI found and how a small team can start this week.
What Is the Role of AI in Business in 2026?
For about three years, using AI meant typing a question and reading the answer. In 2026 that is only the warm-up. OpenAI's CFO Sarah Friar describes the new phase in one line:
"Europe is now in a new era of AI, with tools that can carry out tasks for people."
The numbers back her up. By the end of September, task-doing tools produced more than half of all AI output at OpenAI's EU business customers. One of them, ChatGPT Work, only launched in July.

What Is Agentic AI?
Agentic AI is software that takes a goal, plans the steps, uses tools and delivers a finished task. Think of a consultant and an employee. The chat assistant advises and you do the work, while the agent does the work itself. OpenAI counts Codex and ChatGPT Work as agentic.
| Chat assistant | AI agent | |
|---|---|---|
| You give it | A question | A goal |
| You get back | An answer | A finished task |
| It needs | A prompt | Access to your tools |
That freedom has a price. A wrong answer costs a minute of reading, but a wrong action can reach your customers. Good agent setups therefore ask for approval before anything leaves the building. Wooxy's own assistant, AMI (Artificial Marketing Intelligence), works this way: you describe the idea in chat and get a template to review.
How Fast Are EU Small Businesses Adopting AI Agents?
If you run a small team, this part is for you. Since May, weekly users of Codex and ChatGPT Work at EU businesses with 200 or fewer users grew more than eightfold. Not one of the 27 member states stayed below fivefold, and Belgium reached 12.1 times.
ChatGPT Work launched in July, and much of the growth followed. Small teams move fast once a tool is easy to open. Small and medium businesses provide 63% of EU private-sector jobs and add over €5 trillion a year, OpenAI's full report says.

Did you know? Marketing is among the fastest movers. Enterprise Signals shows 26 times more weekly Codex users there since February, against 5 times in engineering.
How Many EU Businesses Use AI Agents in 2026?
The honest answer is that nobody knows exactly, and OpenAI does not pretend to. The report counts output tokens, the chunks of text a model generates, and asks how many come from agents. By the end of September, more than half did.
Important: The sample covers only ChatGPT Enterprise and Business accounts. Treat the figures as a signal, not a census.
Which EU Countries Use AI Agents the Most?
Now to the leaderboard, and it holds a few surprises. Lithuania tops the list with 85% of AI output coming from agents, and Cyprus (81%) and Hungary (79%) follow close behind. Europe's biggest economy, Germany, sits in the middle at 51%. Spain and Slovenia trail at 30% and 22%.
| Country | Agent share of AI output | Small-business agent user growth since May |
|---|---|---|
| Lithuania | 85% | 6.8x |
| Poland | 76% | 6.5x |
| Sweden | 73% | 8.0x |
| Estonia | 71% | 7.8x |
| France | 55% | 9.2x |
| Germany | 51% | 7.5x |
| Spain | 30% | 8.8x |
| Slovenia | 22% | 9.2x |
The right-hand column hides the best story. Spain and Slovenia sit at the bottom on agent share, yet their small businesses grew faster than Lithuania's and Poland's. The two columns come from different samples, so do not read too much into it. Still, the laggards are clearly not standing still.
Is the EU Behind the Global AI Frontier?
At the very top of the market, the EU does lag. OpenAI calls the top 10% of firms by AI output per user "frontier firms." Only 10% of them are based in the EU, while North America hosts 65% and Asia-Pacific 13%.
The numbers show how big the gap is. By September, output per user stood at this multiple of a typical firm's May level:
- 12.9 times at frontier firms outside the EU
- 6.1 times at EU frontier firms
- 1.5 to 1.6 times at typical firms, on both sides of the border
The lead keeps growing: by June, leaders produced 8.3 times more per user than typical firms, up from 2.6 times in January.
So the biggest divide in this market lies between companies that put agents to work and companies that do not. Brussels is betting on closing it. The Commission's Apply AI Strategy targets adoption, especially among small businesses, with calls worth up to €1 billion.
What Do Businesses Need to Get Real Value From AI Agents?
OpenAI's report ends with a to-do list for Europe: get past experiments, build skills and confidence, and make advanced tools more affordable. Only the middle item is fully in your hands, so let's start there.
Do AI Skills Matter More Than AI Tools?
In OpenAI's data, skills carry more weight than tools. Every company in the sample already has access to ChatGPT, yet leaders use the extras far more. At frontier firms, 19% of weekly users use Skills, which are reusable instructions for agents, against 3% at typical firms.
In other words, leaders turned repeated tasks into saved routines. OpenAI's CFO says businesses grow stronger when people have:
"the tools, skills and confidence to use AI well."
The Commission sees the same barrier. Its June 2026 Digital Decade report notes that many small firms still face barriers to advanced digital solutions.
Professional tip: Pick one task, write down its steps and let the agent repeat it weekly. A Wooxy workflow can take over once it works.
Access to Business Tools and Data Through MCP
Why did software teams adopt agents first? Enterprise Signals gives the answer: "Codebases give agents clear context, tests make outputs easier to verify."
Marketing has neither by default. An agent cannot see your open rates, and nobody runs a test suite on a newsletter.
Ask a chat assistant why Tuesday's campaign got fewer opens, and it invents a plausible story. It needs a way into your account. That is the job of MCP, the Model Context Protocol, an open standard for connecting AI apps to outside data and tools.
Anthropic introduced it in November 2024 to connect AI assistants to the systems where data lives. The official documentation compares it to a USB-C port: one plug that fits many devices. Because it is a standard, you do not rebuild the connection for every AI app.
It already works in the apps many teams use:
- Claude supports remote MCP servers as custom connectors.
- Cursor reads MCP servers from a config file or its settings page.
- ChatGPT adds them in developer mode, as our setup page for OpenAI shows.
How Does Wooxy MCP Help Businesses Use AI Agents for Marketing?
Everything above comes down to one gap: your AI chat cannot see your marketing account. Wooxy closes it. Wooxy MCP is a connector that links any MCP-compatible AI app, such as Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor, to your Wooxy account. The agent then works with your real data instead of guessing.
With it, an agent can draft templates for email, SMS, Web Push and Telegram. It can also build segments from a plain description, schedule one-off or repeating campaigns and read performance reports.
There is nothing to install. Our MCP documentation describes a remote server and how to connect it to your favorite AI chat. You add it as a custom connector, sign in with your Wooxy login and approve a consent screen.
We wrote a guide for the popular apps: Claude, ChatGPT and Codex, Cursor, Grok, Lovable, Cline, Kiro CLI and Hermes. Pick the chat your team already likes, and the same connection comes along.
What Can AI Agents Do With Wooxy MCP?
Imagine an ordinary Monday. You ask your agent which email campaigns got the most mobile opens last month, and it answers from your campaign reports. Then you ask for a segment of contacts who have not opened anything in 30 days, and it builds one. Finally you ask for a win-back email, and it returns a template preview to approve.
The win-back method follows our guide to bringing back customers after 90 days. The agent can also check your setup, including sending domains and Telegram bots.
Why Do Marketers Choose Wooxy MCP for AI Agents?
Marketers like it for one reason: they stay in charge. Every call runs as your own Wooxy user, so it never goes beyond your permissions. No API key changes hands, and scheduling tools are flagged as write actions, so compliant apps ask for your approval first.
You can read how we protect account data in our security overview and our GDPR page. Still choosing an assistant? Our ranking of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini by trust can help.
Did you know? Even experts over-trust automated suggestions, a bias shown in a 2010 review by Parasuraman and Manzey. So read what you approve.
How Can a Small Business Start Using AI Agents in 2026?
Nobody asks you to rebuild your company. Frontier firms do nothing exotic. They run more real work through agents every week. Three steps are enough to join them.
- Ask one read-only question. Connect Wooxy MCP to your chat and ask which contact list is largest and how it splits by language. Nothing is sent.
- Hand over one repeatable job. A weekly campaign summary or a win-back segment is plenty. When it works, turn it into an automated workflow.
- Keep a human on the send button. Review every scheduled campaign, as we explain in our post on Claude sending Gmail emails.
Professional tip: Pick one metric before you start, such as mobile opens. One number shows within a week whether the agent helps.
Pick a day this week, connect your first agent and ask one question. In seven days you will know if agents earn a place in your routine. You will also have joined the group that is pulling ahead. For the bigger picture, read how AI is transforming the role of the CMO.
Wooxy runs email, SMS, Web Push, Telegram and Viber from one account. Paid plans start at €5.99 a month, and a free Trial is available. New to automation? Our marketing automation guide for small businesses covers seven strategies, and you can activate customers with automated campaigns.
